Why Being Found in AI Answers Matters for a Local Business

More of your customers now ask an AI assistant who to call before they ever open Google. That doesn't replace Google. It adds a second place you need to be found. The same groundwork serves both.

Are people really using AI to find local businesses?

Yes. In early 2026, BrightLocal found that 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or another AI tool for local business recommendations. EMARKETER expects more than half of US internet users, 55.1%, to use AI tools like these in 2026.

Google is changing too. It now puts AI summaries above the regular results for many searches, and question searches get them most. In a Pew Research Center study, 60% of searches starting with “who”, “what”, “when” or “why” produced one. People who saw a summary clicked a regular link on 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked on 15%.

Is AI search replacing Google?

No. Most people use both, moving between a regular search and an AI answer depending on what they need. They might explore with an AI assistant, then check a phone number or reviews on Google.

Google is building both into the same place. EMARKETER forecasts that Google's AI Mode will grow from 9.7% of US internet users in 2025 to pass ChatGPT in monthly users in 2027. Back in 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search volume would fall 25% by 2026. These are forecasts, not measurements. But they all point the same way: more of the searching happens inside AI answers.

What does an AI assistant look for when it recommends a business?

Nobody outside these companies knows exactly how they choose. But they all need the same basic facts to say anything useful about you:

  • What you are: a roofing contractor, a CPA, a day spa.
  • Where you work: your town and the areas you cover.
  • What you do: your services, named the way customers say them.
  • The same facts everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings should all agree.
  • Answers to common questions, written so each one makes sense on its own.
  • What customers say about you. Reviews still matter a great deal.

If your site doesn't spell these out, an AI assistant has to guess. It may simply name someone else.

Does my own website still matter?

Yes. BrightLocal studied about 200,000 local searches on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. 93% of the websites those tools used as sources were business websites. Those sites made up 42% of everything the tools cited. In plain terms, your own website is one of the main places these tools learn about you.

AI answers are also short. They name only 2 to 4 businesses on average, so being one of the few matters.

A strong Google Maps listing isn't enough on its own, either. In the same study, a tracked business showed up in 66% of Google Maps searches. It showed up in only 32% to 38% of AI answers.

What does this mean for your website?

Most small business websites were built for people to look at, not for software to read. An AI assistant can't read a photo of your service list or a phone number buried in an image.

A site that works for both people and AI assistants does a few plain things well:

  1. It states your business type, address, phone and service area in a standard format that search engines and AI assistants read directly.
  2. It lists each service on its own, in your customers' words.
  3. It answers common questions in plain sentences.
  4. It lets search engines and AI assistants in, rather than blocking them by accident.

It's the same work that helps people find you on Google.

Can anyone guarantee my business shows up in AI answers?

No. Nobody can promise that ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok or Google will name your business. They change how they answer all the time. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a spot in an AI answer.

What a good web company can promise is the groundwork: your facts written clearly, in the right format, and checked before launch.

Common questions

Do people use AI assistants to find local businesses?

Yes. In early 2026, BrightLocal found that 45% of consumers use ChatGPT or another AI tool for local business recommendations.

How many businesses does an AI answer recommend?

Usually only 2 to 4. BrightLocal found ChatGPT named about 4 businesses per answer, Google AI Mode about 3.5 and Google AI Overviews about 2.5.

Can anyone guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

No. Nobody can promise what an AI assistant will say, because these tools change how they answer all the time. What a web company can promise is the groundwork: clear, correct facts in a format the tools read.
