What's Included in a Site Care Plan?

A Site Care Plan is the ongoing work that keeps a website online, secure and on your own domain after it launches. Ours is free for the first 6 months on every plan, then $89 a month or $890 a year. This post lists exactly what it covers, what it doesn't, and what to ask any company about theirs.

Many companies bundle a vague “maintenance fee” into their pricing and never say what it covers. That is where surprises come from later.

What does a Site Care Plan cover?

Ours covers six things, written into our client agreement:

• The security certificate (the padlock in the browser), renewed automatically.
• Checks around the clock, so we know when your site goes down and start fixing it.
• Your domain's renewal date watched, so it never lapses by surprise.
• Help when your domain settings need changing, such as pointing email somewhere new.
• A monthly check that everything still works.
• One technical support request a month, up to 30 minutes.

What isn't included in Site Care?

Site Care keeps the site running. It doesn't add to it:

• New blog posts or other new writing.
• Google Business Profile or social media posts.
• Design changes or new pages.

New pages and blog posts can be bought one at a time as add-ons: a page is $497 and a blog post is $247. Regular Google profile and social posts come with a monthly retainer, which starts at $379 a month with no setup fee and no minimum term. Larger retainers add a one-time setup fee and a three-month minimum, listed on our retainers page.

Who pays for the domain name?

You do, directly. The domain stays on your own account, and its yearly fee, typically $10 to $20, goes straight to the company you registered it with. It is a separate bill from Site Care, and we never add anything to it. What Site Care adds is someone watching the renewal date and the settings.

What happens if my website goes down at 2 a.m.?

That is the question to ask any company about its plan. With ours, an automated check notices, we get an alert, and we start fixing it. No one can promise a site will never go offline, but you shouldn't be the one who notices first.

How do I cancel Site Care?

Give us 30 days' notice by email. We hand over all your files and logins within 5 business days, and your domain and content stay yours. If you'd like help moving the site to a new host, we'll do it for a flat $147. That's optional.

What should you ask about any company's maintenance plan?

1. What exactly does the monthly fee cover, item by item?
2. How many support requests does it include, and how long can each take?
3. Who watches the domain renewal, and whose name is the domain in?
4. What happens to my site and files if I cancel?

A company with a clear plan can answer all four in a minute.
